The Winklevoss twins were born on August 21, 1981, in Southampton, New York. They attended Harvard University where they studied economics and were members of the Porcellian Club.
While at Harvard, they conceived the idea for a social networking website called HarvardConnection (later renamed ConnectU) and hired fellow student Mark Zuckerberg to work on the project. This led to a famous legal dispute when Zuckerberg launched Facebook instead.
After settling their lawsuit with Facebook for $65 million in cash and stock, the twins turned their attention to cryptocurrency, becoming early investors in Bitcoin. They founded Gemini, a cryptocurrency exchange, in 2014.
Sued Mark Zuckerberg over the creation of Facebook, claiming he stole their idea for a social network while he was contracted to work on their project, HarvardConnection.
Competed in the Beijing Olympics in men’s pair rowing, finishing in 6th place. The twins trained extensively for this achievement while also pursuing their business ventures.
Revealed they had invested $11 million of their Facebook settlement into Bitcoin when it was trading around $120 per coin. At Bitcoin’s peak, this investment was worth over $1 billion.
Founded Gemini, a cryptocurrency exchange that would become one of the most regulated and trusted platforms in the industry, earning the nickname “the Bitcoin billionaires.”
Gemini became one of the first crypto companies to receive a BitLicense from the New York State Department of Financial Services, establishing them as leaders in regulatory compliance.
